Books About Trevathans
There are several very interesting books about Trevathan genealogy, though
unfortunately all are now out of print.  If you have a specific question about
information in one of the books, we may be able to help.  As possible and with
permission, we will publish excerpts and photos from these books.
Robert Dempsey Trevathan, born 24 July 1869, died 25
Mar 1957
, lived in North Carolina and published the first
compilation of Trevathans in 1942.

The Life History of Dempsey Trevathan and
    Descendants
    by R. D. Trevathan, 1940

R. D. wrote that Dempsey and his brother John came to
this country from France during the years 1820 and
1825.  We now know that this is incorrect but we do not
know the origin of th
at story.

Ken Trevathan of New Zealand has done a lot of work
identifying his Trevathan/Trevethan ancestors in N.Z.
and in Cornwall.  His book

A history of the TREVATHAN FAMILY,
    Compiled by K L Trevathan

is the most comprehensive published compilation of
information on Cornwall Trevethans.  This book has
gone through several revisions as Ken obtained more
information.
This information is very interesting even
though DNA testing has shown that Ken is not related to
the U.S. Trevathans.
The contents of the book are now
published on
Ken's web site

Ruth Trevathan Delvige compiled and published a large
book:

    TREVATHAN FAMILY HISTORY And Their
    Descendants
Library of Congress Catalog Card Number:
    96-085864
    by Ruth Trevathan Delvige

which is a listing of descendants of Rhoda Leander and
John Trevathan, born about 1780 in Richland County,
South Carolina, and died 1838 in Alabama.  Rhoda
moved to Texas after John's death.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Ruth Trevathan Delvige and Donis Trevathan Bettis
compiled another book:

    DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM TREVATHAN,
by Ruth Trevathan Delvige and Donis
    Trevathan Bettis.

which documents descendants of Mary Lassiter and
William Trevathan born about 1690 in Cornwall and
died about 1743/44, in Chowan, North Carolina.  The
descendants, of John born about 1780 are not included
since it was not known at the time this book was put
together than John descended from William.
Trevathan locations in the U.S.
Help us identify Trevathan locations: streets, cemeteries, and other...

Here are a couple:
  • The town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina
  • The post office of Trevat, Texas - established June 15, 1892, in the 150 person
    community of Trevathan
  • (There are Trevathan cemeteries in Henry County Tennessee and in Calloway County
Kentucky, but I have not found on-line maps that identify them.)

Web Sites of Interest

Several Trevathans have created web sites about their ancestors (let us know of other sites
that should be added to this list):

Barbara Trevathan has information on a number of her Trevathan ancestors in an easy
    to follow tree structure

There is Trevathan information on many web sites that focus on other names:

Valerie J. Tice lists her Trevathan research information on her web site

Other sites of interest to Trevathan descendants:

    the Family Tree DNA website

The Legacy software program is used for all the records on this site.  If you submit
information to add to the database, any format is acceptable including hand-written
notes, but a Legacy file is preferred..  Free downloads of a basic version of this
software are available and can be used indefinitely:
